Mysterious MaltaTouching the Goddess8 day Autumn Equinox trip exploring some of the most significant sacred sites of Maltaled by David Furlong Because of Covid-19 no trips have been organised for 2021 or 2022Malta is an island steeped in history and full of mystery. Boasting the oldest free standing temple sites in the world sites that date back to 3600bc, Malta was the home to a unique cultural group that first made their home on this small island group in the Mediterranean more than seven thousand years ago. At some point around 2500bc these people completely vanished, leaving traces of a sophisticated culture but little else and it was not until Phoenician and Roman times that the land was extensively settled again. Some suggest that this was the home of Plato’s fabled island of Atlantis, for archaeological remains have been discovered under the sea surrounding the island. In more recent times the Knights of St. John settled here in 1530, having been driven out of their home on Rhodes by the Ottoman Turks. Thirty years later Malta was attacked by the Turks in one of the most famous sieges in history when the invaders were eventually repulsed. This siege was echoed again in the Second World War when Germany tried, unsuccessfully, to conquer this island group.
